Our favorite gaming laptop just received an OLED upgrade – where to buy the new Asus ROG Zephyrus G14

The best gaming laptop you can buy right now has just been launched with a new OLED version. For our money, the 2023 edition was about as good as gaming on gaming laptops, so we’re incredibly excited to see the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 (2024) hit the market. Read on for more details on pricing and where you can buy this laptop.

As soon as we put our hands on the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 (2024), we knew it was the real deal. My boss (Computing’s Editor-in-chief, Jason England) wondered if it was the “true MacBook Pro of gaming?” High praise indeed.

In Jason’s article, he noted that the latest edition of the Zephyrus G14 family brings “lovely improvements to the formula that makes our best gaming laptop no. 1 even better.” Processor performance has also been enhanced with the new AMD Ryzen chipsets, making it so good “it could compete with Apple’s MacBook Pro as a sturdy and versatile option”.

Where to Buy the New Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 (2024)

Asus is now on the verge of launching the latest model of its popular laptop range, with the new Zephyrus G14 available for pre-order from some retailers in the US, including the Asus store and EXcaliberPC. The price starts at $1,599 and can go up to $2,199 for the most expensive configuration. We have not heard from Asus about international release dates or pricing yet.

So, what has changed since we reviewed last year’s brilliant Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 (2023)? The main upgrade is obviously the new ROG Nebula OLED screen. Last year’s model had an impressive mini-LED screen, which I thought was close to “good OLED.” However, having the real deal now is a huge boost. While mini-LED technology has evolved to a point where there are enough dimming zones to produce convincing black levels, these screens still cannot switch off individual pixels to achieve perfect blacks like OLED.

The resolution of the model I reviewed last year also received a significant boost. The ROG Zephyrus G14 (2024) now features a 3K (2800 x 1800) 16:10 screen with a refresh rate of 120Hz. In comparison, its predecessor has a 2,560 x 1,600 screen, although the refresh rate is certainly higher at 165Hz. Add to that response times of just 0.2ms, support for Dolby Vision HDR and Nvidia G-Sync features, and this could well be the most impressive gaming laptop screen you will see this year.

Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 (2024): Specifications

In terms of configuration options, as you can see above, our favorite gaming laptop successor consists of an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 laptop GPU, an AMD Ryzen R9 8945HS processor, and up to 32GB of LPDDR5x memory.

Aesthetic improvements have also been made across the board. Compared to the review unit of the 2023 model I spent a lot of time with, this is a thinner and lighter gaming laptop than its predecessor. While its predecessor weighed 3.79 pounds and measured 0.77 inches wide, the new Zephyrus G14 weighs just 3.31 pounds and 0.63 inches wide.

This is likely due to a few key factors. Firstly, OLED display technology is the thinnest display tech on the market. Secondly, the version I reviewed last year had a more powerful (and therefore likely heavier) graphics card in the form of the RTX 4090 laptop GPU. While I am a little disappointed that the current highest config you can upgrade to is limited to an RTX 4070, I would not be surprised if Asus releases a more expensive version of the latest G14 with Nvidia’s top-of-the-line card before the 2024 release.

The fact that the GPU is slower than the high-end model from last year is at least partially offset by the new processor. AMD’s Ryzen R9 8945HS is notably faster than the Ryzen 9 7940HS from the old model, which will be useful in the best demanding PC games, as more and more modern titles are becoming CPU-taxing.

To top it all off, even though its form factor is smaller thanks to a thinner aluminum shell, the new ROG Zephyrus G14 has a larger touchpad and 25% larger speakers than its predecessor. If you’re a fan of flash, you’ll also be pleased to learn that Asus’ latest gaming laptop features new LED lighting on the cover of its chassis.

We should have our final review of the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 (2014) gaming laptop with you soon. Needless to say, our hopes are immense.
