Dell has introduced two new Precision laptops aimed at users in modern work scenarios. The Dell Precision 7670 and 7770 offer high performance, stable display specifications and thin CAMM memory, allowing for up to 128GB capacity.

With the two new Precision notebooks Dell Precision 7670 and 7770, the manufacturer continues its new product range, having already presented the compact Precision 5470 workstation with a 14-inch screen last month.

On the other hand, Dell relies on a 16-inch form factor for the Precision 7670, while the 7770 is slightly larger at 17 inches. Both laptops are powered by a 12th generation Intel Core i9 processor, which has a TDP of 55 Watts. Intel vPro is also supported.

The 16 GB NVIDIA RTX A5500 or the optional GeForce RTX 3080 Ti is used as the graphics solution in the top model. In terms of storage, both laptops can be equipped with up to 16 terabytes of SSD storage via four PCIe Gen 4 slots.

Subtle or effective?

Potential buyers have a choice between a slim frame and a performance frame for the smaller 7670. They differ in size, weight and the maximum graphics solution that can be equipped.

The slim frame measures 356.00 mm x 258.34 mm x 24.70 mm (W x D x H) and weighs 2.60 kg. The only graphics solutions available here are the NVIDIA RTX A1000 (4GB, GDDR6) and the NVIDIA RTX A2000 (8GB, GDDR6).

Meanwhile, the performance model measures 356.00mm x 258.34mm x 27.45mm and weighs 2.67kg. Here, an RTX A3000 (12 GB), RTX A4500 (16 GB), RTX A5500 (16 GB) or the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti with 16 GB GDDR6 takes care of the graphics. The larger Dell Precision 7770 does not offer this option. The same graphic solutions are available here. The dimensions are 398mm x 256.02mm x 28.50mm and the weight is 3.01kg.

Dell uses new CAMM RAM

The working memory is particularly impressive, because Dell does not – as usual – use SO-DIMMs here but the specially developed CAMM (Compression Attached Memory Module) with DDR5 memory.

In direct comparison, CAMM memory is significantly thinner than its SO-DIMM counterparts, thus allowing more RAM to be squeezed into a compact laptop case. CAMM RAM is claimed to be 57% thinner. The memory chips are only mounted on one side here. Thus, Precision laptops can be equipped with up to 128 GB of RAM, while the maximum for SO-DIMM devices is 64 GB.

CAMM units, however, are significantly wider than their counterparts and more difficult to market, making potential upgrades difficult. Not to mention the higher price. Six screws hold the working memory to the case, which is connected by contact pressure.

CAMM RAM is a fast 4800 MHz in the 16 GB, 32 GB and 64 GB variants, while it is 3600 MHz in the 128 GB. The downside: since dual-channel operation is not expected, a failure in working memory could have serious consequences.

Powerful displays on new Precision laptops

The Dell Precision 7670 and 7770 also offer high quality in terms of displays. The 7670 uses a 16-inch display with a 16:10 aspect ratio, with a WQUXGA (3,840 x 2,400 pixels) OLED display that includes a touchscreen on the high-end model.

The Precision 7770, on the other hand, has a 17.3-inch screen in the classic 16:9 aspect ratio. Here you have to do without OLED technology and touch mode, but there is an IPS panel with a resolution of 4K and a frame rate of 120 Hz.

Prices and availability

The two workstations, Dell Precision 7670 and Dell Precision 7770, are expected to be released globally before the end of the second quarter of 2022. However, the manufacturer has not yet revealed pricing information.
