INTERVIEW. Artificial Intelligence, Internet Scams, In Cyber Forum Seen by the Director of the Hauts-de-France CyberCampus

Six questions to Florence Puybareau, director of operations at Campus Cyber Hauts-de-France Lille metropolis on the occasion of the Forum In Cyber in Lille exhibition, the 16th edition of which takes place at the Grand Palais, until Thursday 28 March 2024.

The Hauts-de-France Lille Métropole CyberCampus is a structure that brings together start-ups, SMEs and regional higher education schools based mainly on Euratechnologies.

What is the interest of this show for you?

The Hauts-de-France Cyber Campus consists of 26 exhibitors with start-ups, cyber SMEs, associations and higher education schools. Our ecosystem is united under the banner of the Hauts-de-France pavilion. It is the showcase of technology in the region. It is an international show with 19,000 people. All the cyber elite in Europe are moving to FIC. So it's a way to make the campus known. We have been around for a year and need to be known throughout the area. […] The primary goal is to make ourselves and our actions known.

Does Artificial Intelligence risk advancing attacks or defenses of computer systems?

Both. AI is used by both. Once a new technology exists, it is used by everyone. This gives people who aren't necessarily very tech-savvy access to near-easy attacks. You can simulate voices, faces, falsify texts. This allows you to lower the ability level to attack. On the other hand, there are also defenders, to be better spotted”weak signals,” meaning things we wouldn't see with traditional tracking tools. I draw a parallel with medicine where artificial intelligence makes it possible to detect cancers or other pathologies more easily than with the naked eye. Shortcomings, intruders who have entered your information system will be able to be detected by artificial intelligence before activating the virus.

How to protect yourself from attacks?

Anssi and just released their threat overview and it's amazing, there are several million attacks per day. You have to get used to a certain digital hygiene: put passwords everywhere, change them when in doubt. When you have a smartphone, you need to change the initial code to 0000. If you have trouble remembering your passwords, get a password safe. They are free. Be careful with recipients. You don't open a message if you don't know the recipient. Pay attention to “https”. The “s” is important, it is a safety indicator. If you are notified that your Ameli account has been compromised, we will change your password. And finally, don't be fooled by tempting offers. THE “you won an iPad“…is to be banned.

Why are there more and more attacks?

Because there are more and more things that can be cyberattacked. Our personal and professional lives… Everything is digital. So it offers so much space to attack. There are people who know they will make money. Nowadays you can find almost free tools for attack. Today, your taxes are online, a power subscription is online, dating sites are online.

Do the Olympics represent fear when it comes to cyber security?

On the one hand, France will be very visible and have enemies, on the other hand, there are unexpected results. Proposals will be made for “cheap” seats. And people want to attack France, its image to show that we are not capable of hosting the Olympics On a local and national scale, there is a lot of preparation.

Is cybersecurity an area of concern?

In France, there are more than 30,000 positions to fill it seems to me. And the number will continue to grow. Some say AI will take jobs but not at all, it will require other skills, it will create jobs. We don't have enough young people training even if the training is there. The salaries are attractive but the jobs are not because the image of the homegrown hacker unfortunately still prevails.
