Baldur's Gate 3 is slowly approaching its first anniversary and the passing months do not change anything, the title still attracts just as many players. The studio has rolled out many updates, fixing thousands of bugs and adding content. However, some issues remain and one player recently paid the price.

Baldur's Gate 3: the new triumph of the role-playing game

When we talk about role-playing games, it is It's hard not to think of Dungeons & Dragons. While not the first tabletop role-playing game, strictly speaking, D&D is what laid the foundation for everything that followed. Video games quickly took an interest in this genre, sometimes adapting the license directly. Our favorite media also developed its own codes, but the titles we call C-RPGs have never gone away. We thought they were targeting a very specific audience, but the year 2023 showed that we could reach a very large number of players. On August 3rd, Larian Studios officially released their latest Early Access game: Baldur's Gate III. Cult license born at BioWare, Baldur's Gate has made a more than remarkable comebackinstantly attracting hundreds of thousands of players.

In September and then December, the game arrived on PS5 and Xbox Series before winning game of the year at multiple ceremonies. Placing us in the shoes of a character infected by a Mind Flayer larva, Baldur's Gate 3 introduces us to vast spaces and hundreds of characters. Players can lead their adventure as they wisheither by making choices, exploiting all classes, completing a wide variety of quests, or exploring.

Extremely rich, Baldur's Gate 3 offers great freedom, opening new paths and possibilities depending on what they decide to do. That way, it's rare to come across a player who has had the exact same experience. To offer this field of possibilities to his community, Larian Studios has developed many systems, nested within each other. Obviously, this one generated a surprising number of errors. The most visible are, thanks to many updatesthey've become less annoying, but there are still a lot of them and one of them just cost an 80 hour game.

This player is losing his 80 hour game in honor mode due to a dialog error

On Reddit, a player named Daxtr0 explains that he started a game in Honor mode, game mode that only allows one save file and requires players to plan their actions as best they can and take responsibility for their every choice. If the main character dies permanently, it's game over and the file is deleted. Honor mode therefore offers a real challenge and the fear of losing several dozen hours the game radically changes the experience. Unfortunately, the player whose story is relayed to us by GamesRadar lost everything due to a persistent bug, which only appears in rare cases.

When the conditions are right, this error replaces and it literally replaces a dialog option with the “continue” option at the top. The original option is still there, but out of reach and invisible. During an extremely important sequence, the player clicked the continue button, thinking to continue his dialogue. In fact, he unknowingly activated an option that ruined everything and caused the death of his main character and hastened the end of the game. So an 80 hour run went up in smoke. If he felt stupid, hehe was reassured by other players explaining to him that it was a mistake:

Many of you have pointed out that luckily I'm not that stupid, because apparently this is a bug where the “continue” option doesn't show you the actual dialogue options to choose from. I wasn't even aware of this bug and just thought it was part of the dialog (…). I don't know if it makes me happy or even sadder that this bug appeared at such a critical point in the game, but alas. I know it's not the end of the world (well, it was for my Tav), but it's still crap, obviously.

Larian plans to release further updates and you can follow this task by joining the Discord server dedicated to Baldur's Gate 3. Various channels are set up and you can even suggest improvements or fixes. However, we don't know if the problem is related to dialogs fixed or not. Apparently, Larian's choice of transparency is paying off: the community seems very pleased to be heard and to see Larian Studios continue to optimize If the studio continues its usual pattern, Baldur's Gate 3 could be entitled to a definitive release in the coming years. As of now, the developers have not announced a definitive version or added content via expansion.
