Discover the best graphics cards for every budget!

Looking for a new GPU to run Alan Wake 2? We’ve listed three of our top choices for the card you should consider if you’re looking to play the game on PC. It’s not every day that a game comes out that really pushes the limits of PC hardware. The system requirements for Alan Wake 2 on PC might have you shaking in your boots. But if your PC doesn’t meet the minimum or recommended specs, it might be time to buy a brand new graphics card. Article continues after ad

Given that the game uses complex techniques like ray tracing reconstruction, DLSS 3 frame generation, and more, we think your best option for running the game will be with Nvidia, rather than AMD. Although Team Red’s RX 7800 XT is a capable GPU, it can’t handle heavy ray-traced workloads. Fortunately for you, we’ve examined every RTX graphics card in Nvidia’s 40 series. 1. Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070
Nvidia’s RTX 4070 sits as a mid-range to high-end option for those looking for a new GPU. Priced at $599, it offers solid performance for 1440p workloads, and according to Nvidia benchmarks, will be able to handle Alan Wake 2 with all features enabled at 91 FPS. This includes DLSS super sampling set to performance, and frame generation enabled, with full ray tracing as well. Of course, you’ll need a good CPU to reach these frame rates, but hitting 90 FPS in 1440p makes the RTX 4070 the best option for most PC gamers, as it’s one of the most common resolutions, and you won’t have to break the bank just to upgrade your GPU. The RTX 4070 also performed exceptionally well in our test, and currently, we’d say it’s one of the best GPUs you can currently choose.

2. Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090
If you’re not short on money and looking for the best performance money can buy, then you shouldn’t look further than Nvidia’s RTX 4090. This monstrous graphics card can reach up to 134 FPS in Alan Wake 2 at 4K, according to official benchmarks, which means you’ll not only have excellent performance at 4K, but blistering frame rates if you choose to set your DLSS settings to Quality. Of course, a $2000 graphics card won’t be within everyone’s reach, and the RTX 4080 also manages to reach 103 FPS with the same settings. But given that the 4090 offers so much more raw power, it’s hard to argue how good this graphics card really is.
Thanks to robust additional support for modern rendering techniques like DLSS 3 frame generation, the RTX 4090 is not only one of the best GPUs for Alan Wake 2, it’s also the fastest consumer graphics card on the planet, according to our review.

3. Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060
Nvidia’s RTX 4060 might be the “weakest” GPU in the RTX 40 lineup, but it can still work wonders when it comes to delivering frames when you need it most, thanks to DLSS 3 frame generation enabled on the card. This allows the GPU to provide much more than it otherwise would. Paired with the rest of Nvidia’s technologies, the RTX 4060 becomes ideal for those looking to play Alan Wake 2 at 1080p.
Official Nvidia benchmarks place the RTX 4060 at a stable 82 FPS in 1080p, which means it might also be possible to get the game running at 60 FPS in 1440p. Given the price of the RTX 4060, this is an admirable effort, and also means you won’t have to reconsider your entire PC just to upgrade your graphics card, as we mention in our review.
Again, note that all FPS quotes we use here come from official Nvidia benchmarks and have DLSS 2, 3, and 3.5 running simultaneously, with “Full” ray tracing. We assume they mean ray tracing.

Do you need frame generation for Alan Wake 2? Alan Wake 2 is shaping up to be one of the most technically demanding PC games ever created. The fact that Remedy is integrating path-traced lighting means it’s incredibly demanding, even on modern graphics cards. To counter this, your GPU will need to use AI tools to run the game at a stable frame rate. Of course, rasterization performance is important, but specifically for Alan Wake 2, you need to consider how important the advantage of being able to use DLSS 3 frame generation really is.

Will FSR 3 be integrated into Alan Wake 2? Remedy has not yet announced whether FSR 3 will be integrated into Alan Wake 2 or not. While it seems it won’t be launched with the feature, we hope the developer will include the technology in a future update to improve performance for AMD graphics cards.
