AMD has recently released a brand new line of processors that are a bit special. Indeed, you're used to seeing processors paired with dedicated graphics cards, but clearly, AMD wants to do away with all that.

Play on a PC without a graphics card thanks to AMD processors

AMD has released an entirely new line of processors, the Ryzen 8000G. While the Ryzen 7000 series excels for video games, thanks to quite generous caches for certain types of games, the red brand definitely wants to win the hearts of gamers.

Indeed, what distinguishes the Ryzen 8000G from other types of processors is that the graphics part of the models, also called iGPU, is particularly emphasized. Indeed, even if you know for sure that some types of processors have integrated graphics, both from AMD and Intel, you often have to pay quite a lot to get THE graphics card to run our latest games perfectly.

Therefore, AMD developed 3 processors at the end of January:

  • Ryzen 7 8700G at €364.90 (8 Hearts)
  • Ryzen 5 8600G at €254.90 (6 Hearts)
  • Ryzen 5 8500G at €199.90 (6 Hearts)

The goal of these CPUs is simple: to allow gamers to play recent video games WITHOUT a graphics card. On paper, the goal is simple enough and even very beneficial for some gamers who don't want or can't afford an expensive graphics card right now.

Processors are naturally much more stressed during low-resolution gaming sessions, for example Full HD (1080p). Therefore, competitive games like Counter Strike, Overwatch or League of Legends can run without a problem with a Ryzen 8000G, without having a graphics card in your computer.

But AMD's promise goes much further than that. The CPU and GPU brand wants to let gamers enjoy the latest AAA without a graphics card.

Is the Ryzen 7 8700G a perfect processor for playing video games?

Among the 3 references offered by AMD, the one we will be interested in is the Ryzen 7 8700G, the most powerful of the series.

With 8 cores (16 threads) and a boosted frequency of 5.1 GHz, we have to say that the processor is rather interesting. Its price is set at €364.90which makes it a very good choice for gaming, even if its price is dangerously close to the excellent Ryzen 7 7800X3D.

The French videographer and expert VCG therefore examined the case of the Ryzen 7 8700G to see if AMD's promises are kept. Obviously, Measurements are made in Full HD, all with low quality in all games.

For a game as greedy as Cyberpunk 2077, taking advantage of video upscaling via FSR, we average around 40 fps. A pretty generous average considering Cyberpunk 2077's gluttony.

The same at headquarters Baldur's Gate 3, because even if it doesn't look like it, Larian Studio's game is still quite challenging. In Full HD resolution, in “low” quality, we get about 40 fps in the city.

Therefore, VCG reminds us that the Ryzen 8700G chip is above all there to serve gamers who want to play games that consume very few resources. The chip even compares to Nvidia's GTX 1060, released in 2016!

Nothing beats the power of a proper graphics card, especially if you want to enjoy recent games in optimal conditions. However, the Ryzen 8000G is still impressive as it manages to run 3D games without a big brick plugged into your PCIe port. The Ryzen 8000G can therefore be a very good choice if you want to build a mini PC for example.
